The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPGA) is excited to announce a new advocacy initiative aimed at introducing provincial Pet Tax Credits.
This proposed legislation would enable pet owners in British Columbia to write off their pet-related expenses up to $5,000 annually, providing substantial financial relief and encouraging responsible pet ownership.
Many people with pets in British Columbia are drowning in debt with high vet care bills, pet care emergencies, taxed pet food, 25% to 37% tariffs on the horizon, a critical lack of pet-friendly rental housing and the continuing rising costs of caring for our furry family members.

From veterinary bills and essential food supplies to grooming and training costs, the financial burden is significant for many families who stuggle just to provide basic necessities. The introduction of Pet Tax Credits would not only alleviate this burden but also promote the welfare of animals across the province by ensuring that people with pets can provide necessary care and resources.
"The wellbeing of pets is closely tied to the financial capabilities of their families," said a spokesperson at BC SPGA. "By implementing Pet Tax Credits, we allow more families and individuals to responsibly care for their pets, leading to healthier and happier animals in our communities."
The BC SPGA believes that these tax credits will have a positive impact not only on meeting the high costs of pet care but also on the overall health of pets in British Columbia. With more resources available for veterinary care and pet necessities, we can reduce the number of abandoned pets, surrendered pets, euthanized pets due to rescues and sanctuaries over-crowding and improve the quality of life for countless animals.

In addition to the financial benefits, Pet Tax Credits would recognize the essential role pets play in the lives of British Columbians. Pets provide companionship, emotional support, and even health benefits to their loved ones, and it is time that the province acknowledges this by providing tangible support.
The BC SPGA invites all pet owners and animal advocates to join us in this initiative by reaching out to their local representatives and voicing support for the introduction of Pet Tax Credits.
Together, we can create a more pet-friendly province while ensuring that the needs of our furry companions are met.
With 95% of Canadians viewing their pets as "family" according to surveys, it is concerning that British Columbians with pets receive no provincial assistance for pet-related expenses or unexpected bills and there are no tax breaks to support them.
It's time to recognize the importance of pets and provide the necessary support for people with pets in our province.
