In the recent 2024 provincial election, Premier Eby's campaign platform took a notable step by advocating for "allowing pets in purpose-built rentals."
The Premier has also expressed his commitment to supporting pet guardians in British Columbia highlighting the "unfair discrimination" faced by pet owners in the rental market.
The Premier has said that “Having a home should mean being able to include your beloved pets” reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of pets in people's lives.
The BC SPGA has actively engaged with BC Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon urging necessary legislative changes to the Residential Tenancy Act for pet-friendly residential tenancies backed by the 2018 BC Rental Housing Task Force Report. However, the Minister has cited this Report to argue against the implementation of such housing policies via the executive director of BC Housing diverging from Premier Eby's stance.
The BC SPGA views Housing Minister Kahlon as the 'opposing party' to the Premier's support of pet-friendly residential housing. A spokesperson for the BC SPGA commented that "The Housing Minister is disrespectful of the Premier and the public in regard to pet-friendly residential housing. The Minister should rightfully step aside."
