In British Columbia, many pet owners are finding it increasingly difficult to manage the financial demands associated with caring for their furry companions.

The highest cost of living in Canada is generally found in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the cost of living is about 45% higher than the national average.

The rising costs of veterinary services, pet food, and essential supplies have created a significant burden for households with pets, particularly those already facing economic challenges.

As a result, some pet owners are forced to make tough decisions about their pets' health and well-being, often prioritizing basic needs over necessary medical care or quality nutrition.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that unexpected expenses can arise at any moment, such as emergency vet visits or the need for specialized treatments. These unforeseen costs can quickly add up, leaving pet owners feeling overwhelmed and anxious about their ability to provide adequate care. Many individuals and families are left grappling with the reality that their love for their pets is being tested by financial constraints, leading to feelings of guilt and helplessness.

The Society For British Columbia Public Guardians And Animals (BC SPGA) provides pet guardian assistance programs, including low-cost veterinary services with providers, to help alleviate some of the financial strain.

We are seeing a growing need for pet guardians in our province to receive help and support to meet the challenges of keeping pets. The BC SPGA helps guardians to manage however our financial reserves have rapidly run dry.

BC SPGA's Guardian and Pets In Hardship Program aims to keep wanted pets with their families and provides temporary help in a crisis. "It's one of our most requested and needed programs for the wellbeing of pets and their guardians in the Province. Sometimes it's just a helping hand with a pet's medicine costs or veterinary care that brings a smile to the children and their famillies." a spokesperson for the BC SPGA said.

The BC SPGA was formed in 2023 as an advocate non-profit, incorporated society for pet guardians and their animals in the province.

The BC SPGA believes that "By fostering a sense of community and encouraging collaboration among pet owners, advocates, and service providers, it is possible to create a more supportive environment where pets can receive the care they need, and their owners can feel empowered rather than burdened by their responsibilities."
